Mr. McGuire is Uniquely Suited to Represent the Northern California Region
The Yurok Tribal Council is pleased to announce the endorsement of Mike McGuire for his run to serve as the US Representative for California’s 1st Congressional District.
“Mr. McGuire has spent a significant amount of time in Yurok Country. Over the years, we’ve learned that he is a truly down-to-earth person with unquestionable integrity and a no-nonsense attitude. He also possesses an extraordinary level of determination and is singularly focused on improving the lives of his constituents. We need more representatives like him,” said Joseph L. James, Chairman of the Yurok Tribe.

Mr. McGuire’s longstanding commitment to rural communities like ours, combined with his ability to drive meaningful progress, makes him an exceptional champion for the people of Northern California and our way of life.
Located in Humboldt and Del Norte Counties, Yurok ancestral territory is extremely rural and we intend to keep it that way. We are grateful to live in a close-knit community, where people take care of each other and the environment. Mr. McGuire knows the health of our Klamath River, ocean and mountain ecosystems is critically important to us.
Currently, the Yurok Tribal Council is expanding our economy while preserving our cultural values. The tribe is creating well-paying jobs and developing affordable housing to enable more of our people to move home. We are also working to improve healthcare access, strengthen electrical infrastructure, and lessen the threat of natural disasters like wildfires. Mr. McGuire understands our vision and has actively contributed to its success.
Through his 12 years of service in the state legislature, Mr. McGuire has repeatedly shown that he understands the unique needs of all Northern California residents, and his experience navigating the obstacles and opportunities that we face is unmatched.
Mr. McGuire has fought to secure millions of dollars for public safety infrastructure, food security, healthcare, affordable housing and environmental restoration. For example, he successfully passed the Tribal Housing Reconstruction and Resiliency Act, which established the first-ever tribal housing funding program in California. Yurok Chairman Joseph L. James provided testimony on how this bill will help address the severe housing shortage on tribal lands.
Mr. McGuire has also supported the Yurok Tribe’s efforts to combat the Missing and Murdered Indigenous People (MMIP) crisis and has sponsored bills that provided greater protections for Native children.
Additionally, Mr. McGuire is intimately involved in efforts to rebuild salmon runs on the Klamath River and Northern California coast, a region that relies on this fishery as a key economic driver. The tribe depends on Klamath River fish runs for sustenance and ceremony.
Based on his actions, we know that Mr. McGuire cares deeply about Northern California communities. We are confident in his knowledge and capability to uplift the lives of all who reside in our region.
The Yurok Tribe encourages everyone to vote for Mike McGuire for Congress in the special election on June 2, potentially the runoff on August 4 and the general election on November 3, 2026.
