Yurok Tribe Marine Department

The mission of the Yurok Tribe Marine Department is to understand, manage, conserve and protect the cultural, biological, physical and subsistence resources of tewolew (coastline) and peeshkaahl (ocean) within Yurok ancestral territory for the benefit of current and future generations of Yurok Tribal members.  The Department will also advocate for and strengthen the inherent and Tribal rights of Yurok Tribal members to fish, gather, harvest, manage and protect these resources.

Recent Findings

 

Purple sea urchins, a native species, can grow unchecked without natural predators such as sea otters and sunflower sea stars.

 

They are voracious grazers and severely impact kelp beds. Contact us about helping to curb their populations in areas like this.
