Water – Monitor and assess the conditions and trends of surface water, groundwaters and coastal water of the Reservation and area draining on to the Reservation. Establish and enforce water quality standards. Support restoration activities with Tribal Fisheries and Watershed departments. Review and issue 401 Water Quality Permits and Wild and Scenic River Act Determinations for waters within the Yurok Indian Reservation. Air – Educate Tribal members on the hazards of air pollution. Represent Tribal cultural burning interests in regional policy forums. Provide information exchange on local air quality conditions and hazards. Develop Tribal Implementation Plan (TIP) for air quality. Burn Permit Applications are available through this link. Solid and Hazardous Waste – Pollution Prevention. Educate Tribal members on environmental and health benefits from responsible solid waste management. Offer workshops on waste reduction practices for Tribal members and Tribal departments. Enhance Tribal infrastructure to handle the Reservation waste stream. Educate concerning and respond to hazardous waste issues, including underground storage tank contamination. More information about the Requa Air Force Station can be found here. Environmental Complaints Investigation - Receive Environmental Complaints from Tribal Members on a variety of issues. Work with Tribal Departments to resolve complaints as possible. Work with Public Safety and the Tribal Court system to resolve complaints through ordinance enforcement as applicable. Pesticides – Coordinate with local stakeholders adjacent to the Reservation on pesticide uses affecting Tribal and other local residents. Monitor for pesticide presence and effects in water, plant, and animal tissues. Conduct public outreach and notification of pesticide use within the Reservation by private landowners. Cultural Resources Protection - Cultural resources consultation, surveys, and monitoring of Yurok Cultural Places throughout Yurok ancestral lands.Monitoring & surveys provided on a Fee-for-Services Basis. Environmental Education – YTEP staff engage in a variety of programs and community activities on Environmental Education. Community outreach and education materials are developed to provide information and resources on the environmental issues re: the Klamath River and the environment of the Yurok Indian Reservation. Environmental Research - YTEP staff are invovled in a wide range of grant funded research projects to assess and monitor environmental conditions of the Klamath River and the Yurok Indian Reservation. Contact Kathleen Sloan, Director.
Environmental Compliance – Advise and assist Tribal departments on meeting compliance requirements for the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), and the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA).
