The mission of the Yurok Tribe Marine Department is to understand, manage, conserve and protect the cultural, biological, physical and subsistence resources of tewolew (coastline) and peeshkaahl (ocean) within Yurok ancestral territory for the benefit of current and future generations of Yurok Tribal members. The Department will also advocate for and strengthen the inherent and Tribal rights of Yurok Tribal members to fish, gather, harvest, manage and protect these resources.​​

Current and Ongoing Research
Yurok Klamath Wave Buoy
The new Yurok wave buoy measures wave conditions and surface water temperature offshore of the mouth of the Klamath River.
Spotter Dashboard
The wave buoy network provides continuous measurements of wave conditions along the California coast.

Current data on wave length, wave period, wave direction, wind speed and direction, barometric pressure, and sea surface temperature.
Research Projects
Intertidal Monitoring
Purple sea urchins, a native species, can grow unchecked without natural predators such as sea otters and sunflower sea stars.
They are voracious grazers and severely impact kelp beds. Contact us about helping to curb their populations in areas like this.
Biodiversity Indexing
We will be performing biodiversity indexing off of the Klamath River Mouth with associated oceanography.
