"Geographic Information System is a computer system designed to allow users to collect, manage, and analyze large volumes of spatially referenced and associated attribute data. The major components of a GIS are: a user interface system; data base management capabilities; data base creation/data entry capacity; spatial data manipulation and analysis packages; and display/product generation functions." (A Glossary of GIS Terminology)
The GIS Program provides a centralized GIS function to the Yurok Tribe and provides services to all departments in the creation, analysis, and mapping of individual projects along with creating data, statistics, map, and land documentation for the Yurok Reservation and ancestral territory to assist all departments and tribal members.
The mission of the GIS Program is to serve as part of the foundation for Yurok Tribal Departments and Organizations, by providing GIS Services, maps, land information, land records and support services. The GIS Program utilizes spatial technologies such as spatial data within Geographic Information Systems, land surveying, and land document organization and integration to provide stewardship over the land of the Yurok People, while providing essential information to all Yurok Tribal Departments for informed decision making. The GIS program strives to manage all Fee and Trust lands within the Yurok Ancestral Territory for the Tribe and its members. The GIS Program currently has 4 full time staff positions who specialize in mapping and land surveying.
The GIS Program is located within the Informational Services department and is comprised of two divisions: the GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and Survey Divisions, each of the 4 employees are cross-trained and knowledgeable. The GIS program provides both direct and indirect services to all tribal departments and is the clearinghouse for all internal GIS Data, which is the information that corresponds with a place on the earth’s surface, the geographic location. Examples include parcel lines, community locations, hydrologic features (rivers, creeks), roads, timber harvest units, and water systems, just to name a few.
