The Yurok Tribe, through its Repatriation Division, holds a commitment to return, preserve, protect and restore all human remains, associated and unassociated funerary objects, sacred objects, and objects of cultural patrimony to the Yurok People and Place. The repatriation of Yurok ancestors and all objects associated with reburial and ceremonies was not originally conceived when the world was made for Yurok People. Given that excavation, selling of ceremonial objects and theft of ceremonial and funerary objects has occurred, repatriation is a necessary part of restoring the balance of the Yurok world. The Yurok Tribe recognizes that these human remains, associated and unassociated funerary objects, sacred objects and objects of cultural patrimony are of great importance and necessary for the continuance and protection of traditional Yurok life ways.
Repatriation Division, as embodied in the Yurok Tribe’s Repatriation staff and Repatriation Committee accept responsibility for the repatriation and management of Yurok human remains, associated and unassociated funerary objects, sacred objects and objects of cultural patrimony.
It is the goal of the Repatriation Committee and Repatriation Program to make recommendations to the Yurok Tribal Council regarding all repatriation issues, with the intent of enforcing Tribal laws, regulation and policies, as well as assisting in the enforcement of traditional, federal and all other applicable laws, statutory prohibitions and regulations, provided that they are not in conflict with traditional Yurok laws spiritual beliefs and policies.
The Yurok Tribe shall assert their right to repatriate within Yurok Ancestral Territory.
